Something I so completely lived with for six months or so that I forgot to
tell about:
egcs has cleaned up configurations, as compared to gcc.
In particular, it no longer defines stuff such as i386 or sparc. You have
to live with the cleaner __i386__ or __sparc__.

The rationale is that
If you have some old source that depends on sparc, it's simple to add
-Dsparc to the proper place in the Makefile, whereas someone who writes 
some portable program may reasonably expect to use sparc for an identifier
and not have problems with it.
