Hmm, the system was updated (src, XF4, and ports) about 6 hours before
the message was sent. A new kernel was installed, a make build completed,
and a build of XF4 completed. I re-updated /usr/ports and re-tried the
port build before sending the message.

So was I just unlucky as to timing, or is there a problem?

Oh, and the port gdk-pixbuf-0.10.1.tar.gz specifically bitches about
libpng.2.0:

  cc -O2 -L/usr/local/lib -o .libs/test-gdk-pixbuf test-gdk-pixbuf.o -L.libs \
-lgdk_pixbuf -lgmodule -lglib -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lgtk -lgdk -lgmodule -lglib -lintl \
-lXext -lX11 -lm -lpng -lz -ljpeg -ltiff -L/usr/local/lib -lgmodule -lglib \
-L/usr/local/lib -L/usr/X11R6/lib -lgtk -lgdk -lgmodule -lglib -lintl -lXext -lX11 \
-lm -ltiff -ljpeg -lpng -lz -lgmodule -Wl,-rpath,/usr/local/lib ld: no shared \
-lpng.2.0 available collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
  *** Error code 1
