i don't know.  as a datapoint, the following (an old motorola 28.8 from
around 1997) is working fine with -current:

pccom3 at pcmcia0 function 0 "Motorola, MONTANA V.34 FAX/MODEM, V2.0 !\^B\^B" port \
0x2f8/8: irq 3: ns16550a, 16 byte fifo
