<QMAIL PLUG>
Listen, monkeyboy: shit-can that sendmail crap and get yourself a
REAL MTA, like QMAIL!!
</QMAIL PLUG>

(That's required around here for MTA discussions, isn't it?)

You want to configure sendmail as a "null client" of your SMTP server.
See
	/usr/share/sendmail/share/cf/clientproto.mc
and
	http://www.sendmail.org/m4/features.html

You also will probably want to run sendmail without the '-bd' flag, so
that it accepts no mail deliveries. Otherwise, anti-spam measures on
the mail server may fail for mail relayed by your null client.
