This is a new modeline, e.g., if it says: "1024x768" 65.15 1024 1056 1248 1440 768 770 778 794 -hsync -vsync This mean you must add a Modeline "1024x768" 65.15 1024 1056 1248 1440 768 770 778 794 -hsync -vsync to the monitor section you are currently using. If I recall well, XFree86 >= 4.0 does leave the XF86Config file rather empty. And it yields default modelines that you may lose (? not sure) if you override the default settings. You can usually find the default modelines that are getting used in /var/log/XFree86.0.log
