I realize that. I guess by my own personal nomenclature, "return" implies, and
only implies, whichever value the function returned, regardless of the fact it
may have "placed" new values somewhere else.

Regardless, I've changed the man page to read:

     An ``empty'' field, i.e., one caused by two adjacent delimiter charac-
     ters, can be detected by comparing the location referenced by the pointer
     returned by strsep() to `\0'.
