You're right, I missed that.

Nothing: I run startx from ~/.bash_profile.
So after X exits, you should be back on the virtual console that you logged
in on, and there should be some kind of message.

I managed to get an openbox executable with debugging symbols: but how
do I launch openbox through gdb in ~/.xinitrc ?
Easiest way, if it isn't a startup crash, is to attach to it after it's
running.
