   I'm still none the wiser why pointer changing doesn't work with openbox
but does with metacity, but the work-around that some people have found
works for me:

ln -s /usr/share/icons/XXXX ~/.icons/default

   (where XXXX is the theme name you want to use).

   That or create ~/.icons/default/index.theme :

[Icon Theme]
Inherits=XXXX

   Anyone know how to programmatically set the cursor theme? It's not as
simple as writing Xcursor.theme through xrdb (I've tried).

   If I knew, I could find out what bit of GNOME is doing it in a
non-openbox environment and mimic it or something.
