I tried to build gnome-session and it fails with,

main.c: In function `check_for_dns':
main.c:222: error: storage size of `hints' isn't known
main.c:226: error: `AI_CANONNAME' undeclared (first use in this function)
main.c:228: warning: implicit declaration of function `getaddrinfo'
main.c:231: error: dereferencing pointer to incomplete type

So, going back to gnome and see what does this error means.

What you need is a session manager, which openbox isn't. Try
gnome-session. Or you could put these apps into your .xinitrc file
