    Ok. For the archives: I had libxml2-2.5.6, portupgrading to 2.5.8_1 
    fixed the problem, and
    
     ./configure --prefix=$HOME/${PWD##*/} && make

    completed successfully. If someone can't / doesn't want to upgrade
    for some reason, the output of

    pkg-config --cflags --libs libxml-2.0

    should look like this:

    -I/usr/local/include/libxml2 -I/usr/local/include  -L/usr/local/lib -lxml2 -lz -liconv -lm
