 I think that much of this is way off.

 Take away the advantages (off-grid use, mesh, kid as owner) and you're
 left with something very uncompetitive. Also, the Open Source good will
 has been mostly lost.

 As it is, the market has changed drasticly since the last G1G1. It's only
 the end of May, yet already the Eee PC is selling for $300. That's with 2x
 the RAM, 2x the storage, and an 800 MHz Celeron. By the time this G1G1 can
 happen, thing like the Dell Mini Inspiron (low cost and superior in most
 ways) will really hurt the desirability of a $400 XO.

 Of course, market-aware pricing (about $1100 for a box of 5) would make
 things workable in spite of the market changes. $400 won't cut it when
 numerous alternatives are available at that price and even below. It's not
 a bad idea to get production numbers up while making the laptop affordable
 to the less well off.
