Greetings,

I am new to data warehousing and have just joined a company that is looking to set up \
a data warehouse/data marts/storefronts to port out data to various consumers.
Looking to me as the new "Oracle guy", my boss has dumped this project in my lap. I'd \
appreciate some pointers, if you feel inclined.
Here's the situation:

We're a publishing company. Our back end databases are mainly on Oracle 9i with all \
kinds of front ends - mostly Foxpro and Java. There are four main OLTP systems that \
are interrelated - editorial (from which the publications get sourced), advertising \
(additional advertising content and features in the published information), sales \
(contracts for advertising), and financials. Each system is home-grown, no third \
party systems.
The idea is to take the OLTP system information once a day, aggregate/transform the \
information through a business rules system, and then further transform it depending \
on the target audience. Other requirements are that it should be available 24/7, that \
the OLAP system should have no effect on the OLTP system, and that only changes to \
the source data should be ported across not exporting the entire OLTP system once a \
day.
I've seen the article about Oracle Discoverer in the last ODTUG journal, which was \
helpful in imagining what goes into this type of system. Other Oracle-specific \
features I'm interest in are advanced queuing (covered in the last Oracle \
Professional journal), replication, materialized views, and the Oracle \
Datawarehousing tool.
At the ODTUG conference last summer I attended several presentations about other \
datawarehousing tools. Are there other options out there I should be looking at? \
Papers that might provide a framework?
Thanks in advance for your comments,

Tom Berthoff
