The schedule at a glance is out there too. It's time to start agonizing over which \
sessions to attend. I always find several I want to go to at the same time. I \
always thought that was the mark of a really great conference! Maggie

All,
We are in one of the hardest places we have ever been as an industry for systems \
development. We are in a period of fastest evolution in the design/development space \
then we have ever been.
We are all being pushed into web deployment without a mature environment or clear \
standards for building systems. OO, J2EE, UML, Agile techniques are moving into our \
organizations. More and more systems are being driven by cowboy Java programmers with \
little appreciation for solid relation database design.
There is loads of new stuff that we should be using in the DBMS, SQL and PL/SQL but \
many of us are still building systems as if the tool set has not evolved since V7. \
Things like instead-of trigger views, autonomous transactions, global temporary \
tables and object collections should be part of every good developers tool kit.
The business rules approach has evolved to the point that whole systems are being \
built will almost all of the rules being placed in a repository.
We need to get together to make sure we exchange our ideas about best practices. The \
thread we have been having on reference tables is a perfect example. The debate \
between ref-tables and generic structures started years ago and has been heavily \
discussed at ODTUG. This is exactly where you can build the understanding to \
meaningfully make a good decision on how to handle that kind of issue.
I know you will get pushback from your organization about taking a "week-off" and \
"goofing-off" at a conference. But there is probably no better week you could spend \
for your organization. The tips you can pick up at the conference could save your \
organizations millions of dollars by improving the design of your next system.
I think any organization that doesn't send at least one developer/designer to ODTUG \
is just nuts. Most orgs that send more than one person find that the people have to \
carefully coordinate who goes to what as they find more than one paper per session \
that they HAVE to see.
