Further update, it only dies if you're running as a daemon (-d switch).

FWIW, I've assigned PR R66TXWB to this.

Summarizing:

 ntop's broken on 4.8, 5.1 (Myself, Stanley)
 ntop works on 4.2 (from Luca)

With the patch (BMS 349), at least you see an error message:

Aug 26 19:31:03 pc09011 ntop[21754]:   **FATAL_ERROR** WEB: Unable to create
a new socket (error 9: 'Bad file descriptor')

Without the patch, since the return is ZERO, the error is hidden and ntop
dies tracelessly.
