Just to clarify things and put this to rest. It seems a number of
people were concerned that the Red Cross plea for tech was
fraudulent, which it wasn't. It seems that the NYC Chapter of ARC
sent out an original plea, but not through "normal" ARC channels. It
instead went out to a few individuals and/or a small list. It was
then resent by numerous people to all sorts of lists, causing the
speculation about it being fraudulent.

TechTv responded to my message with the message below. In summary,
the plea was verified and valid at the time it was originally sent.
NYC ARC received thousands of offers of support (of all sorts) and
say they need time now to see if they have all they need.

Finally, to those very few of you who, for whatever reason, have
strongly indicated that you wish I would stop sending these sorts of
Administrivia messages...TOUGH, get used to it or unsubscribe. To the
hundreds of others who've thanked me for sending such messages,
THANKS!

If you're looking for a way to provide hands-on tech help, this might
be a place to offer it;

Subject: Red Cross Plea for Tech Donations

Hello,

Some concern was expressed that TechTV's story about Red Cross tech
donations was fraudulent.

tml

It was not. We confirmed this story with Dorothy Webman
(dwebman@webmanassociates.com), President/CEO
Webman Associatesand volunteer for the Red Cross before publication.

http://www.workgroup.org/aboutus/aboutus_executivecommittee.htm

Initially we had Dorothy's email address which she advised us to
change to
Joseph Leo's.

We received word this morning (via an autoresponder) that donations
were no
longer needed and are updating the story to reflect this.

Just wanted to clear this up, and thank everyone for their help.

I am not able to check email with any regularity at this time.
Please
forgive any delays in responding to you. If you are responding to the
request for assistance after the World Trade Center disaster, thank
you! The
support that we have received from the national I.T. community has
been
overwhelming. We received over a thousand offers of assistance and
equipment
in less than twenty-four hours! What we thought would be sent to five
or six
people has made it from sea to shining sea, awesome is the power of
the
internet. What we really need MOST at the moment is time... time to
sort
through what has been offered and to reassess our needs. Please
forgive us
if we can't respond right away and please don't forward our message
at this
time. I don't know how else to thank you all for your compassion and
generosity but I feel privileged to be part of the I.T. community, a
community in every sense of the word.
