I had a similar problem recently.  Mine turned out to be that the
jumpers on the motherboard were set to disable the on-board NICs (sound
of palm on forehead).  Perhaps there's a BIOS setting that disables it
too?  Other than that, I have no clues.  My cluster was running 4.1
until a few weeks ago, and used (and uses) the tg3 with no intervention
on my part.
