Thank all of you for your responses.  I took Rob Aronson's advise and backreved to \
the mpk14.psm and the problems went away.  After running for a few weeks now with no \
recurrence of the problem, I believe I can safely say that was it.  Maybe I'll give \
the hyperthreading stuff another shot in the next service pack or maybe I'll just \
leave well enough alone. . .

I had a similar issue and it turned out to be the hyperthreading of a P4
CPU and the APCI architecture. The answer  was to revert back to the
older mpk14.psm files in startup.ncf.
