The latest Perl Journal had an article on a Perl module for the use of
inline C code directly in your Perl.  I haven't tried this out yet, but
this could also take steps towards overcoming some of the performance
bottlenecks in Perl.  Perhaps a similar concept could be ported to Python?
I know little to nothing about Python, so I can;t say for sure.
