I just logged in, so I don't think it's a server issue.  My settings are:

Protocol: MSN
Screen Name: my_email_address@hotmail.com
login server: messenger.hotmail.com
port: 1863
The "Use HTTP Method" is not set.

I'm not behind a Proxy.

What version of Gaim are you using?
