Well even though I didn't see any response to my issue, I finally
figured it out.  I'm posting this "solution" in case anyone else
encounters similar problems.

It turns out that FC2 puts the hostname in /etc/hosts for the 127.0.0.1
in addition to localhost for that address.  Maybe this is "normal" and
I've forgotten that I had fixed it long ago.  Removing the hostname from
the 127.0.0.1 entry and creating a new one with the real IP and the
hostname did the trick.  I restarted sendmail and all worked again.
