Hey, don't beat yourself up over it. <GRIN>

After seeing your "lsof | grep ..." line, I said "hey that maybe the
answer to my own sometimes umount failure problem" also.

  Then I did 'man lsof', <GRIN> never take any command at face value,
expressly if it requires root level access to run </GRIN> and saw the
list of options and arguments [names]. A little testing and therefor the
question.

<GRIN>  Also a note about support on SCO * servers. </GRIN>

BTW
  While on my current setup 'lsof' is in /usr/sbin/, I can still run it
as a regular user and get useful results.
