From my understanding, maintaining a site with Slash is really easy. You just log in on the actually site as an administator and post articles. It would be easy to have several people be able to post stories and moderate (or comments could be disabled on some stories). I do suppose it _could_ replace the mailing list, but would that mean people posting questions? Maybe a simple message board would suffice on the site. On the topic of maintaining and the learning curve, making changes to the site would be as easy as clicking check boxes and typing the text.
