Glad it worked.  If I recall what happens is the batteries get low but
not completely dead, this puts the newt into a sate of "deep sleep"
which sometimes it does not want to come out of with just replacing
batteries etc.  Leaving it without power for a few hours usually does
the trick (as you found out).
