It always seems to be the little things that trip me up. Thanks, René, it worked that way.

Shell scripts run just fine. When I created a script with the two lines,
it simply output "Goodbye" to STDOUT, just like it should. When I ran
"/bin/sh -v configure", here's what happened::::
[root@ma netsaint-plugins-1.2.9-1]# /bin/sh -v configure >
~/netsaint_configure_output
#! /bin/sh

So, you were (or were not) able to run the configure
script as root?
What happens when you execute '/bin/sh -v configure'?
How about running a short script like:
#! /bin/sh
echo "Goodbye"
