Unfortunately you need a working ping in order to run configure.
You can run check_fping afterwards with no problems.

you can get a copy of rh7.2 ping from 
http://guinness.cs.stevens-tech.edu/~sghosh/netsaint/rh7.2-ping

just copy it to /bin/ping
