The old machine was an HP Elitebook 2170p. The Thinkpad X61 is a little 
better. On netbsd-9 audio recording doesn't work, but with a current 
kernel it will record silence (might be my confusion about mixer 
settings). OTOH, wip/xoscope will just hang with
