Turned out a connector had some damage, and the insulation was bending
a pin on the mating connector.

What had me going nuts was:

> sd1: sync (100.00ns offset 8), 16-bit (20.000MB/s) transfers, tagged queueing
> sd2: sync (100.00ns offset 8), 16-bit (20.000MB/s) transfers, tagged queueing

but later:

> sd1: sync (132.00ns offset 8), 16-bit (15.150MB/s) transfers, tagged queueing

Best guess is that the bent pin was only used in wide mode, and that
the boot probe is done in narrow mode. Then after boot it switched to
wide mode and got bogus data.
