Definitely works for me. Vmware Workstation 4.0.0, NetBSD 1.6.1

I just created a new machine with blank virtual ide disk of 1 gig and 
bailed out of installation. Did a dmesg and grepped for ide. This is 
what I see. What do you see if you did that?
