Sounds like it's resetting when the Carrier Detect signal drops on your
serial connection -- a common problem.  At the sun's OpenPROM prompt,
enter:

  setenv ttya-ignore-cd true

Then reset and reboot the system.  It should now ignore Carrier Detect.
