What is the acceptable way to build X?

I was under the understanding that I should be using the modular
version of X, but when I build an installation with it, I then can't
seem to get items that link with libGL and libglut to understand that
I've got X installed.

I'm particularly trying to install pkgsrc/graphics/gle (or MesaLib...
or half a dozen others).

I have X11_TYPE set to modular in my mk.conf, but should I have it set
to something else????
