Hi everybody,

I experience a strange problem with MacOS 10.4.5 and MacOS 10.3.x.
While it is possible to copy indivual files and even bunches of
files, I obtain an error when I copy large amounts of data (>= 2GB
in my experience). The Finder then givens me an error message,
most of the time

   "Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an
   unexpected error occured (Error code -41)"

and stops, not even telling me with which file the problem occurred.
I then tried copying using "cp -R" in the Terminal and received tons
of "Too many open files in system" errors. (Both errors occur when
I am copying FROM the server to a local hard disk.)

After a while I realized that on the linux side (netatalk version
1.6.3), afpd is not happy, too:

   Mar  7 17:42:43 localhost afpd[1708]: [ofork.c:196]: E:AFPDaemon:
   of_alloc: maximum number of forks exceeded.
   Mar  7 17:43:06 localhost last message repeated 9 times

Does anybody know what this means? Is it serious? How can it
be circumvented? If this error shows up, does this mean that
I should recopy the data? (I am worried about data that I copied
from the server but where I have not looked in the log, which
is full of these errors...)

I have approximately 400GB of data that I must copy to a backup
drive, and it is out of question that I copy them in small
bunches ;-)
