Im not sure what you mean here. You are trying to copy the files from  
within Linux, right?

As you have noticed, Suse 9.1 and onwards uses utf8 and I suppose  
your old system used isoxxx.
You can convert the files from within Linux, search the suse  
knowledgebase for how to do that.
The best solution would be to copy the files via a Mac: mount both  
Servers - old and new - and copy the files. If you use Retrospect,  
you get the added benefit of a write-verify.
