I wrote such a script some months ago... can be used directly with papd, as
an lpd filter, a CUPS backend (only basic functionality) or as a
notification script of a Helios EtherShare printer queue:

In the meantime I wrote a CUPS backend for a similar purpose. It can also be
used to drive GhostScript but is much more customizable. I tested it with
MacOS X only but it should also work well on other UNIX variants after some
slight modifications (the path to the chown command for example)

    <http://users.phg-online.de/tk/MOSXS/postscriptfile.txt>

Both variants take care that already existing output files won't be
overwritten (by appending a numerical suffix) and both can be used by
netatalk and/or samba, too...

Regards,

Thomas
