It depends on the device.

Yes - that's certainly one common approach.

Once again, it depends on the device.
You need to look at the documented APIs for the devices in question.

As far as the agent is concerned, it doesn't matter *how* you
retrieve (or update) the management information - that's purely
between you (as MIB implementor) and the developers of the device
driver.
