Initial Comment:
After starting snmpd anywhere from 10 seconds to 5 minutes I stop getting a response \
from the SNMP server.  The process is still running, but I never get a response on \
the port.  I've only had it crash once.

OS:
Solaris 10
root:~# uname -a
SunOS bwaaa-chtn 5.10 Generic_138888-08 sun4v sparc SUNW,Netra-T5440 Solaris

5.4 is outdated. Please update to the latest version in the 5.4.x branch
(5.4.3) and see if you can reproduce.
