>Summary: 5.3 Destroyed netw. interfaces not removed from ifDescr list
Initial Comment:
Under Linux 2.6.14 using the tun driver with tinc, a new ifIndex is used
every time the tunnel comes up. I.e.:
[slamb@rosalyn ~]$ /sbin/ip link show
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue
link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen
1000
link/ether 00:40:05:35:54:30 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
3: sit0: <NOARP> mtu 1480 qdisc noop
link/sit 0.0.0.0 brd 0.0.0.0
5: slamb.org: <POINTOPOINT,MULTICAST,NOARP,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc
pfifo_fast qlen 500
link/[65534]
[slamb@rosalyn ~]$ sudo killall tincd
Password:
[slamb@rosalyn ~]$ sudo tincd -n slamb.org
[slamb@rosalyn ~]$ /sbin/ip link show
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue
link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen
1000
link/ether 00:40:05:35:54:30 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
3: sit0: <NOARP> mtu 1480 qdisc noop
link/sit 0.0.0.0 brd 0.0.0.0
6: slamb.org: <POINTOPOINT,MULTICAST,NOARP,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc
pfifo_fast qlen 500
link/[65534]
I _believe_ this behavior is correct, but net-snmp 5.3 can't deal with it.
It accumulates multiple descriptions of the same device:
IF-MIB::ifDescr.6 = STRING: slamb.org
IF-MIB::ifDescr.7 = STRING: slamb.org
IF-MIB::ifDescr.8 = STRING: slamb.org
with only the latest marked as up. The old ones should be destroyed.

I see the same problem (Linux 2.6.12-i386) using "vpnc".
The problem exists in versions 5.2.2 and 5.3.
