That would be it. I installed from an RPM and the don't_blame_nrpe was set to 0.

It's not necessarily looking for them. Was it compiled with that  
option and enabled in nrpe.cfg? See the SECURITY file in the package.

What do the logs show on the remote server (/var/log/messages  
probably)? That should give a clue to the problem, if not the actual  
problem.
