I have the 42" Sharp Aquos (42D64U) connected with HDMI and it does 1080p
fine with my motherboard (Abit AN-M2 / AMD 5000+). It has onboard DVI
graphics, so I just use a DVI->HDMI cable to connect to the TV. You can get
the cable from monoprice.com if you are in US/Canada - their prices are
great

I've also used the same TV with a slightly slower computer with a $20 MSI
graphics card doing the DVI->HDMI capture, and it was able to do 1080p as
well. Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127273

The setup is straight forward, and newer xorgs have modelines for 1080p.
