It seems there are no 2.8.0 packages of lm_sensors available (not stable, not experiemental) on Gentoo, so I tested with 2.7.0. The fan on my system instantly went full tilt (at least that is what it sounded like - normally I do not hear the fan except on boot), and when the CPU temperature reading went below the freezing point, I figured it definitively did not work. I poked around the lm_sensors website and learned that with newer versions of the lm_sensors package there is a i2c-nforce2 module, which is probably what I need, so I have decided to wait until I can install it easily on my Gentoo based system.
