Now why would he want to cripple his computer by doing that?  Linux has caused me weeks of grief, headache and frustration trying to make it useable on a desktop.  Windows 98 is a better and much more stable OS from my experience.  And I've tried at least 4 different distributions.

Start by deleting XP and installing Linux. 
This way saves yourself hours of trouble. ;-)
