Sorry -- forgot to add that.

It's MySQL 4.1.7-standard running on fedora core 2 with 2.6.8-1.521 kernel.

I installed via the RPMS from the MySQL website.

These connections are not coming from a pool.  It is a fresh connection (fresh 
meaning that I am doing work with the connection, then it suddenly fails.  If 
I "refresh", it usually works again.
