I got a copy of the 1.22 sort, and it works as expected (and faster on a
large file). I've sent a 'bug report' to the textutils maintainer at gnu.

doesn't work on Redhat 6.1 intel for me either. If I take the file in
the order
you gave it to me, I get it back in the same order. Sort on Redhat 6.1
says version 2.0 (GNU)

I have sort on NT and a slackware dist that both work fine they are both
version 1.22 (GNU)
