Been there, done that, moved on :-)-O (Polite for RTFM)

I upgraded to 5.2 yesterday and recompiled without any problems.

CFLAGS="-O6 -w" ./configure --prefix=/usr \
	--exec=/usr --libdir=/usr/lib \
	--localstatedir=/var/lib/mysql \
	--datadir=/usr/share

This is required by the former RPMs I used in the past.

If it's a first installation, just run 

	./configure; make; make install

and take the defaults.
