On Windoze-clients you can set a 'slow connection' indicator (see 
properties -> advanced)
Not sure if there is an option for the java clients

...this should by far be fast enough for the few bits that SAP uses (was 
it around 5-10k per screen?). I tend to use it on 20k telepone dial-ins
