The e-mail you quoted didn't contain a Return-Path: header at all.
According to the "From " line, the Return-Path: header should be fine
(as I explained before).

You can see what sendmail does by using:

sendmail -bt
?
/tryflags es
/try esmtp mugworth
/try esmtp mugworth@localhost

etc...
