I don't know if you on the list back then, but there was another idea
proposed to handle this a year or two ago.

It involved having fetchmail maintain a local cached copy of a set of
IMAP mailboxes. You tell mutt to read those mailboxes and to maintain
a log of the operations performed on the mailbox. Then, when you rerun
fetchmail, it reads the log, performs those operations on the
remote mailbox, and updates the local cache with changes from the
server-side.
