Can you reproduce this with (1) a different kernel version, or (2) a 
different file system, or (3) locally?

I'm very sorry, but when a weird problem involving 2.4-pre* linux 
kernels, ext3 fs, and NFS shows up, I wouldn't look for the problem 
on the mutt side of things.
