Ellen,
I expect you have a mboard problem.  The fact that it didn't recognise
the second cpu immediately suggests a problem.  Perhaps the second cpu
is faulty and thus caused a mboard (partial) failure resulting in the
poor performance.  Are you sure the original cpu is in?

Also cpus have different version numbers and they should be matched in a
multi-processor setup.

Check the BIOS settings for cache, etc.  (no doubt you have already done
this a hundred times).
