Hi All

In Caché 4 we support XML. Data can be exported from the database as XML
messages as well as importing data from other XML sources.

M Globals have an intelligent structure and M Systems have proven their
worth in ease of extracting, manipulating and reporting from said
structures. But, how do you and the community respond to the new paradigm
of XML?

(Did I ask a question?)

Nigel, I'm not the one you'd need to ask those questions. I'm an M
programmer who believes in M, and that's all I am. My comment was simply
my cynical way of saying that KP as an organization has apparently decided
that it prefers off-the-shelf (sort of) products to home-grown applications,
and since it has embraced Oracle as its national database standard (hope I'm
not saying anything I'm not supposed to!), the pattern has been to choose
Oracle-based third party apps to supplement (and eventually replace?) its M
systems. (DB, you monitoring this? Feel free to jump right in!)

So now we get to the nub of the issue... something better than MUMPS. I
answer this question with a question or two...

1) What is it that you want from a DBMS?
2) What do you perceive you will get from something other than MUMPS?
3) What options are you looking at and why?
4) Do you perceive Caché as just MUMPS?
5) How many man-years do you have invested in your existing application?
6) How rich is your data model?
7) Could you re-model the schema in a pure relational technology?
8) If you were to re-write the application in brand new technologies, how
long would it take?
9) Do you believe the end result would be successful?
10) Do you believe you have all the salient information on Caché and it's
capabilities?
11) Do you have all the facts about migrating MUMPS applications to Caché?

Oh and by the way, some of those likenesses between Bush and the Chimp were
truly scary:)

Well, now that you mention it, the resemblance *is* rather striking...

kp.org = Kaiser Permanente, doing its best to replace all M systems with
something "better"...

Actually, it's a rather neat study of sim-biotic relationships.
(Humor, Mike, get it? ;-)

BTW, what does kp.org do?

Cheers,
Tom
