Actually flip it around:

Write $TR($J("",$L(X))," ","_"),$TR($J("",$L(X))," ",$C(8)),X

and you will get a non underlined version on the screen but underlined on
the printer.  Even better is to check if the printer supports underlining
and use the on/off escape codes.
